About us

The Raganiukė Theater is a professional theater for children, composed of artistic and culture spaces for even the smallest of our viewers. We hold performances, educational theater classes, summer art camps and other activities for children and their parents.

We are a children’s repertory theater that organizes tours in Lithuania and abroad. Before the COVID-19 quarantine, the theater boasted of its status as the largest repertory theater for children in Lithuania. Today, we’re working hard to regain this status.

The Raganiukė Theater is located in the Fabijoniškės micro-district of Vilnius. Its founder and long-time manager is director Rita Urbonavičiūtė.

Theater environment. The theater boasts a unique interior and exterior, unlike any other theater in Lithuania! Upon arrival, audiences are instantly transported to the magical world of Raganiukė. The theater is filled with various pieces of handmade decor that reflect its namesake. In the theater, guests can experience Raganiukė’s reading corner – a theater library where even the pickiest reader will find their new favorite book. Visitors are also welcomed by the teddy bear museum and picture exhibition hall, both of which are unique in Lithuania.

What’s more, the Raganiukė Theater boasts the largest number of teddy bears held anywhere in Lithuania – and we are currently aiming for the world record!

History

The Raganiukė Theater, established in 1997, is a performing arts institution with the status of a professional theater.

Of the numerous theaters founded at the beginning of Lithuanian Independence, it is the only one which has remained independent, developed its activities, and continued to actively operate with its own funds to this day. In order to immortalize Raganiukė, writer Otfryd Preussler’s character of justice and goodness, director R. Urbonavičiūtė, with the author’s support, gave the theater its name. As part of the theater’s independent troupe, the Raganiukė artistic director puts on performances and organizes tours in Lithuania and abroad.

Repertoire and activities

The theater has one of the largest repertoires of performances and events for children in Lithuania. This includes over 40 performances, 12 of which are included in the permanent repertoire, which is enhanced with new premieres every year. In addition, the theater:

• performs activities in the fields of culture, education, art, and leisure;
• organizes performances and events within the theater and hosts performance training at other institutions in Vilnius and in other Lithuanian cities;
• participates in the Cultural Passport platform and organizes performances as part of tours abroad;
• provides non-formal education services, organizes camps, and organizes international festivals and other international projects;
• actively participates in charity activities, cooperates with educational institutions, and regularly participates in training programs for performing arts professionals.

International projects

The theater also prepares and implements international art projects and collaborates with international theater festivals. Among these projects were the first international professional performing arts festival for children in Lithuania – Modern Theater for Modern Children – along with the first international cultural conference for children in the country.

After regaining independence, the theater participated in the ASSITEJ festival of the international association of theaters for children and youth for the first time. The theater also represents the city of Vilnius in cultural events in Lithuania and abroad. The Raganiukė Theater is a proud member of the IETM network, an international informal performing arts network, in addition to which we annually present plays for Lithuanians abroad.
